The honest answer depends on your loc stage, your hair's natural growth rate, and how you treat your locs between visits, but there are some solid general guidelines worth knowing.
A general starting point
Starter locs and freshly installed sisterlocks: every 4 to 6 weeks
Established, mature locs: every 6 to 8 weeks
Thicker microlocs or looser retwist styles: sometimes every 8 to 10 weeks
These are starting points, not hard rules. Your loctician will look at your new growth, the tightness of your existing twists, and your scalp health to recommend what actually fits your hair.
Healthy, well-maintained locs don't happen by accident, they happen on a schedule.
Signs you might be overdue
